Its yellow daisy-like flowers are easily seen from a distance. Both varieties bloom throughout the summer, but if flowering slows, prune back by half to promote fresh growth and new blooms.

Growing chrysanthemum: Chrysanthemums thrive in rich, well-drained soil and prefer full sun, as long as their roots are kept cool and shaded by surrounding plants. If not, partial sun will suffice. An eastern exposure is ideal for both types. Before planting, mix in a slow-release fertilizer. Plant after the last frost when the soil has warmed. Space the plants 8 to 12 inches apart to ensure dense coverage.

Propagating chrysanthemum: Chrysanthemums can be propagated from seed or cuttings. Seeds typically germinate within 14 to 21 days at temperatures between 60 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Sow the seeds 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting them to the garden, and they will bloom approximately 10 weeks after sowing. Cuttings root easily and quickly.
