Although washing your car only when it appears dirty is technically acceptable, it may not be the best approach. We consulted a cleaning specialist to uncover the ideal frequency for car cleaning and the consequences of neglecting it.
Recommended Frequency for Washing Your Car’s Exterior
According to Melissa Maker, cleaning expert and founder of Clean My Space, maintaining a regular car cleaning routine is extremely crucial. She recommends washing the car’s exterior monthly or as required, depending on seasonal factors or usage frequency.
“During winter, it’s advisable to clean your car more frequently,” she notes. “Dirt accumulates on the exterior and can easily transfer to your clothing, like jackets or pants.”
This principle also applies to summer road trips. “Your car’s sides can get dusty or covered in bugs,” Maker explains. “In such cases, you should wash your car more often.”
Recommended Frequency for Cleaning Your Car’s Interior
The frequency of interior cleaning depends on how much you drive. Maker suggests seasonal cleaning with detailing products or even biannually if your driving is minimal and you avoid long trips.
Maker emphasizes that vacuuming the interior frequently and conducting a quick trash check are excellent habits for maintaining cleanliness. “We make it a rule to remove everything from the car when we exit,” she explains. “Whether it’s trash or other items, nothing gets left behind.”
The Importance of Regular Car Washes
Neglecting regular car washes can lead to long-term problems. “Skipping washes allows salt, dirt, acid, and dead bugs to damage the paint,” Maker warns, resulting in a lackluster exterior. “If you value your car’s appearance and want it to shine, regular washing is essential to remove these contaminants.”
Keeping your car clean also minimizes the risk of rust and corrosion, which can negatively impact its performance and longevity.
Ideal Time of Day for Washing Your Car
“Whether you’re washing your car manually or using a car wash service, avoid doing it on sunny days,” advises Maker. Sunlight can cause soap or other cleaning products to dry too quickly, leaving a filmy residue behind.
The best times to wash your car are “early morning or dusk,” Maker suggests, or on overcast days. Alternatively, washing your car indoors in a clean garage eliminates the need to consider the time of day.
