Often marketed as a natural and healthier option, coconut water is claimed to outperform sports drinks such as Gatorade in hydration and electrolyte restoration after intense workouts. However, for light to moderate exercise, it doesn’t offer any significant benefits compared to regular water.
During prolonged physical activities, such as completing a half-marathon, replenishing carbs, calories, and sodium is crucial for maintaining energy. Earlier research on coconut water indicated little to no benefit when compared to traditional sports drinks or water before or after exercise. This study published in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism aimed to explore whether coconut water had any unique hydration effects during exercise.
Conducted by researchers at Northumbria University, the study involved ten active participants who cycled for 60 minutes at 65% of their maximum effort, followed by a 10-kilometer time trial in a single session (repeated twice). Participants consumed either plain water or coconut water at specific intervals. Measurements included heart rate, urine hydration levels, thirst and fullness sensations, sweat rate, blood glucose, blood lactate levels, and other subjective metrics.
The results revealed no significant differences between coconut water and plain water in terms of performance, heart rate, sweat rate, or perceived exertion levels.
These results align with previous research, such as the study published in Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism, which also concluded that coconut water doesn’t outperform plain water for hydration. However, the study has limitations, including a small participant group and exercise sessions limited to low-to-moderate intensity for under 80 minutes.
The key takeaway: For shorter workouts (under an hour), water is an excellent option if calorie intake isn’t a concern. For more extended, high-intensity sessions, coconut water can be consumed if you prefer its taste, but supplementing with additional sodium and carbs is necessary for effectiveness. Alternatively, consider these other sports drink options.
