While enjoying videos on my Mac, I prefer an uninterrupted viewing experience. Notifications, the menu bar, and especially the mouse pointer can be distracting. Enabling Do Not Disturb and switching to full-screen mode solves the first two issues, but the mouse pointer can be stubborn. Whether it’s hovering over playback controls or acting glitchy, the pointer often stays visible. Fortunately, there are reliable methods to hide the mouse pointer on your Mac, ensuring a seamless viewing experience for shows, movies, and YouTube videos.
Position the pointer in a less noticeable area
This is the simplest solution for a persistent mouse pointer. When watching a video in full-screen mode, move the pointer to a spot on the screen away from playback controls, and it should vanish. This method works most of the time, but when it doesn’t, it can be frustrating. To minimize disruption, I often move the pointer to the far right edge of the screen, ensuring it doesn’t obstruct the video even if it remains visible.
However, settling for this isn’t necessary. If you want your cursor completely out of sight every time, consider these alternative methods:
Tap a key on your Mac’s keyboard
Were you aware that keyboard shortcuts can make your mouse pointer vanish? There are several options available, though you might need to experiment to find one that works for you, especially if other apps have claimed some of those shortcuts. Below is a quick rundown of shortcuts that can hide the cursor on your Mac:
Press any key: It’s true. Nearly every key on your Mac’s keyboard can hide the cursor in full-screen mode. Here’s how: move the cursor to any spot on the screen and press any key. The cursor should vanish within a second or two. While a few keys like Caps Lock might not work, most keys will do the trick. The effectiveness of specific keys can vary depending on the app you’re using. For example, YouTube uses the K key for play/pause.
F8 or F9: Try moving the cursor once to locate it, then press F8 or F9. Some users may need to press fn+F8 or fn+F9. The cursor should disappear in about a second.
Command-.: The Command-period shortcut also hides the cursor on certain Macs. While it doesn’t work on my Mac due to 1Password using that shortcut, it appears to be effective for many others.
Utilize Cursorcerer to conceal the mouse pointer on your Mac
For enhanced control over your Mac’s mouse pointer visibility, explore Cursorcerer. After downloading, simply double-click the file to install it. The tool will appear in macOS’ System Settings as the final entry in the left-hand menu. From there, you can set up a global hotkey to hide or reveal the mouse pointer. The default shortcut is Option-Control-K. By default, the pointer reappears when you move the mouse, but the settings allow you to automatically hide it after a period of inactivity and disable its reappearance upon mouse movement.
In summary, Cursorcerer allows you to fully conceal the mouse pointer if desired. If you choose this option, only the keyboard shortcut will bring it back. However, I don’t recommend this approach. Instead, set a reasonable delay (e.g., 15 seconds) before the pointer hides and assign a keyboard shortcut to toggle its visibility. This ensures you can easily locate the pointer even if you forget the shortcut. Alternatively, you might prefer to keep the default settings and use the shortcut only when needed to hide the pointer.
