While owning a barn might be out of reach, a stylish pair of cowboy boots isn’t—and neither is bringing the "cowboy core" aesthetic into your living space.
Wondering how to make your home feel more yee-haw and less city-slicker? It’s simpler than you’d expect. Check out these ten tips to infuse your home with the popular "cowboy core" vibe.
Adopt a Western-Inspired Color Scheme
From paint and artwork to fabrics, there are numerous ways to infuse a Western-inspired color scheme into your home. “Bringing cowboycore into your space involves embracing natural elements and taking cues from the untamed allure of the American West," explains LA-based designer Alisia Sophia Geanopulos. "Consider shades like saddle brown, rust red, muted green, dusty denim blue, and warm neutrals that reflect the desert terrain, complemented by turquoise accents to capture the spirit of the frontier.”
Opt for Wooden Furniture and Decor
Deep brown wood tones can instantly evoke a classic Western atmosphere. “Incorporate a reclaimed wood coffee or dining table, or a chestnut brown accent chair,” recommends Geanopulos—but avoid making the space feel like a film set. Selecting a few darker furniture pieces ensures the look remains contemporary, says brand designer Alicia van der Lieth. “To give the cowboycore aesthetic a modern twist, focus on one or two key elements to prevent it from becoming overpowering.”
You can also introduce wood in subtle ways. For instance, place a vintage wood cigar box from a thrift store on your coffee table to hold remotes, or use a wooden charcuterie board for serving snacks.
Showcase the Hides
A cowhide rug (whether real or faux) is an excellent way to anchor a living room or bedroom, offering both texture and a genuine Western feel. For a more understated approach, consider cowhide-inspired dining or accent chairs, suggests digital creator Aurelie Erikson.
Explore Taxidermy-Inspired Decor
Taxidermy is a daring option that may not suit everyone, but it undeniably embodies the cowboycore aesthetic. If a real animal head isn’t your style, try a ceramic animal head bust or vase as a stylish alternative for your living room or den.
Display Those Cowboy Hats
Von der Lieth suggests taking that cowboy hat off your head and using it as wall decor instead. For instance, decorative cowboy hats can be beautifully displayed on a shelf or placed on top of a stack of coffee table books.
Incorporate Western-Themed Pottery
“Showcase handmade terracotta pottery in earthy tones to evoke a Western feel," says Erikson. "Opt for hand-painted vases or ceramic bowls featuring Western designs and fill them with textured items like woven balls for an authentic cowboy touch."
Introduce Desert Plants
Say goodbye to last year’s trendy olive tree and replace it with a cactus. Geanopulos also advises using terracotta pots filled with cacti to bring a touch of desert charm into your home.
Add Brass Accents
The right hardware can introduce subtle hints of vintage cowboy allure. “Ornate or antique brass door knobs bring a touch of old-world tradition to unexpected places,” says von der Lieth. You can also choose brass faucets, towel bars, and cabinet pulls for a cohesive look.
Include Western Prints and Patterns
A Western-inspired pattern can instantly transform any space into a cowboycore haven—removable wallpaper prints are a great example. Applying this wallpaper to a dining room or home office can make the space as fun and inviting as your favorite pair of cowboy boots.
Remember That Lucky Horseshoe
Von der Lieth emphasizes that it’s straightforward and foolproof—hanging a lucky horseshoe above your door is always a winning choice.
