No need for a calculator to find the midpoint of odd measurements like 37 5/8 inches. The experts at This Old House show two simple methods to divide a length using just a tape measure.
In the video above, Tom Silva walks us through both methods. The first method is simpler, requiring just one tape measure:
Measure the length of your item, such as a board.
Round up to the nearest number that’s divisible by two, like 40 inches in this case.
Stretch a tape measure diagonally across the board until the 40-inch mark aligns with one edge.
Mark a pencil line at the 20-inch mark (half of 40). This will be the center of your 37 5/8-inch board.
The second method involves using two tape measures, each stretched from opposite edges. Find the point where both measures meet—this marks the center.
Math is enjoyable, but math tricks can be even more exciting.
