To incentivize hospitals to improve patient care, the federal government imposes penalties on facilities with the highest rates of infections, readmissions, and patient injuries. Under the Affordable Care Act, Medicare payments to these hospitals are reduced by up to 3 percent per patient, based on the penalty type.
Now, the Kaiser Health News service offers a search tool enabling patients to pinpoint nearby hospitals that have faced such penalties.
You can search by hospital name, city, county, or state. This allows you to review penalties related to readmission rates and hospital-acquired conditions from 2015 to 2019.
Note that the default search year is 2019. To view hospitals penalized in earlier years but not in 2019, select “Any Year” from the drop-down menu.
