After a couple of years of unnecessary spending, one of my New Year’s resolutions is to be more mindful about saving money. It's clear where I need to cut back, like dining out or shopping for clothes, and there are plenty of simple ways to reduce my expenses.
The one area I anticipate struggling with is socializing with friends. When typical hangouts involve bar visits or dinners at trendy restaurants, a few outings can quickly add up, especially when your friends aren’t as financially cautious as you are.
That’s why we’re gathering suggestions for more affordable hangout ideas. One particularly exciting suggestion comes from Audrey Gonzalez of The Financial Diet:
A friend of mine proposed the idea of starting a cooking club. Every month, someone volunteers to demonstrate how to make a favorite dish, whether it's chicken pot pie, paprikash, or black bean and spinach enchiladas. We've also had people show us how to decorate cakes or even create a home garden from scratch. We plan the cooking club meetings weeks in advance to accommodate busy schedules and kids, and since we have enough members, each person only needs to volunteer once or twice a year. The rest of the time, you just show up, learn a new skill, and enjoy a free meal.
A wonderful way to catch up with friends, offer some comfort, and show off your cooking skills. You could also opt for a classic potluck gathering instead.
Another idea we’ve previously suggested: Start a short story club. It’s less time-consuming and expensive than a book club, and, as Nick pointed out, you can be more creative and experimental with your choices.
A movie club is another great option. Inspired by the Unspooled podcast, some of my family members and I are working our way through the AFI Top 100 Movies of All Time list. We select one movie every two weeks, watch it, and then discuss. You could easily do something similar, adjusting the schedule to fit your needs. The best part is that many of these movies are available for free online, or you can rent them for less than the cost of a cup of coffee.
