LEGOs are all about endless possibilities: What can you create from a box full of bricks? As a child, I spent countless hours digging through our family’s LEGO stash, crafting various gadgets and inventions. My older brother, when he wasn’t teasing me, would occasionally join in, and together we’d spend hours constructing imaginative structures—likely why he became an architect and I took up amateur boxing. He mastered building; I perfected throwing punches. Both skills have their merits.
The challenge with LEGOs, particularly if you’ve amassed a large collection, is organizing what you own. Over time, pieces get mixed up, and some even go missing. It’s frustrating when you’re working on a specific project and realize you’re short on the necessary parts to complete it.
A Guide to Using Brickit, the Innovative LEGO Scanning App
A new app named Brickit, now available in the app store, scans your LEGO collection to generate a detailed inventory. It counts your bricks and categorizes them by size. Simply spread your LEGOs on a flat surface, snap a photo, and the app will recommend models you can build, complete with step-by-step instructions.
Among the creations you can assemble are a platypus, a typewriter, a race car, a train, and a peacock, with more designs expected soon. Brickit even pinpoints the location of each LEGO piece in your scanned pile. If you’re missing the exact size or color, the app encourages you to embrace creativity, staying true to the LEGO spirit.
Currently in beta, the app has a few quirks and limitations. It’s exclusive to Apple devices for now, with an Android version planned for release this fall. Additionally, it doesn’t yet support scanning Duplo or Technic series pieces.
Despite its limitations, Brickit unlocks a world of creative potential. Grab your LEGOs, snap a picture, and dive into building.
