Adam Berry/Getty ImagesSmartphones: We love them, but let's face it, we also do some pretty silly things with them. A T-Mobile commissioned survey reveals that almost half of smartphone owners have either lost, damaged, or had their phones stolen. Among those who have damaged their phones, 37 percent scratched the screen, 29 percent spilled a drink on it, 29 percent dropped it down the stairs, and 20 percent dropped it in the toilet (yikes!) For many smartphone owners, using a case seems like a no-brainer. But not everyone agrees. Some believe that smartphone cases aren't as effective as advertised. After all, no case—especially one you'd actually want to carry—can offer complete protection from damage. Cases also make phones bulkier and can obscure the sleek design of your device. If you're not careful, they could even harm your phone. Dirt and debris can accumulate between the case and the phone, leading to scratches. The most protective cases can be pricey, especially since you often need to buy a new one when you upgrade your phone. Additionally, cases can be a hassle when it comes to docking your phone for syncing or charging, as they often need to be removed each time you want to connect to your car or home stereo system.
While there are some excellent reasons to use a smartphone case, it’s important to keep it clean so dirt doesn’t accumulate between the case and your phone. A good case can offer solid protection from scratches and even shield your phone from damage if it falls (although don’t use this as an excuse to test its durability by tossing your phone from a height). Although a case may not enhance your phone’s aesthetic, it helps preserve its functionality. A drop might not cause noticeable harm, but without protection, the camera lens can easily break. Additionally, some sleek smartphones are slippery, so a textured case can help prevent accidental drops. There are waterproof cases available, but even basic ones can give you extra time to rescue your phone from a puddle of spilled beer (don’t worry, your friends won’t mind).
Do smartphone cases really prevent damage? To some extent, yes, but it’s also crucial to take care of your phone properly. For instance, I suggest keeping it far away from the toilet.
