If you spend any significant time scrolling through TikTok, you’ll probably come across videos where someone aggressively modifies a bottle of Fabuloso cleaner, accompanied by captions like, “Had to test this hack!” They puncture the bottle, place it in the toilet tank, and demonstrate how the water changes color to match the cleaner. The claim is that this method cleans the toilet with each flush and releases a fresh scent.
At this point, you should approach TikTok cleaning or home improvement hacks with caution, even if this one appears relatively harmless. So, is it worth trying? The answer is a firm no.
It reduces the efficiency of your toilet’s flush
The primary reason to avoid placing a cleaning solution bottle in your toilet tank is that it displaces water, reducing the toilet’s flushing efficiency. Bomisch, a home renovation resource guide, explains that using a standard 45-ounce Fabuloso bottle for this hack cuts the water per flush from 1.6 gallons to 1.2, which is insufficient for a strong flush, particularly when preventing waste from sticking to the bowl.
In pursuit of cleanliness, you’ll end up flushing pleasantly scented water… but possibly leaving behind waste. It’s counterproductive.
You could potentially harm your toilet
If the idea of needing to flush twice or use a plunger hasn’t deterred you, consider that certain cleaning products can gradually degrade your toilet’s components. Plastic and rubber parts are particularly vulnerable to chemical damage.
Spruce Toilets, a manufacturer in the industry, also cautions that surface cleaners aren’t designed for toilet use—especially in such quantities or concentrations. Continuously exposing valves and connecting parts to these chemicals risks damage, meaning “eventually, you’ll need to replace all the components if you want your toilet to remain functional.”
