New research published in the European Heart Journal suggests that the timing of your coffee intake plays a critical role in your longevity. The study indicates that drinking coffee in the morning is more beneficial than consuming it later in the day, and it might lower mortality rates in the U.S.
To investigate the link between coffee consumption timing and lifespan, researchers conducted cluster analysis on national survey data, including information from over 40,000 U.S. adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The findings show that morning coffee drinkers were 16% less likely to die from any cause and 31% less likely to succumb to heart disease. Dr. Lu Qi, who led the study, explained in a press release, "It's not just about whether you drink coffee or how much, but also when you drink it that matters. Although we usually don’t consider timing in dietary guidelines, maybe it’s something we should start thinking about in the future."
The Connection Between Morning Coffee and Longer Life
Coffee has long been seen as the ideal way to start a productive day. According to the study, about 36% of participants consumed coffee in the morning, 16% drank it at various times throughout the day, and 48% were non-coffee drinkers. Dr. Qi, who led the research, explained, "This study doesn’t explain why drinking coffee in the morning lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease, but one possibility is that drinking coffee later in the day could interfere with circadian rhythms and melatonin levels. These disruptions might impact cardiovascular risk factors like inflammation and blood pressure."
Not everyone follows the typical nine-to-five routine, so timing your morning coffee may not be feasible for everyone in the U.S. However, if you have control over when you drink coffee and want to improve your sleep quality while possibly boosting your longevity, it’s worth considering a morning coffee habit.
