Finding mold in your home is a problem that shouldn’t be overlooked. Depending on its location and extent, professional intervention might be necessary. However, if mold appears on wooden furniture, you can often tackle it yourself. Here’s what you need to know.
Steps to Clean Mold Off Wooden Furniture
Various types of mold can develop on wooden furniture. While black mold typically requires professional removal, other molds can often be treated using common household items.
Follow these steps:
Ensure your safety
Start by wearing protective gear, including gloves, safety goggles, and a mask or respirator.
Safeguard your living space
Use a vacuum, preferably one with a HEPA filter, to clean the furniture and remove loose mold spores or dust.
Whenever feasible, relocate the furniture outdoors or to the garage for cleaning. Alternatively, cover surrounding areas with plastic sheets.
Clean the surface thoroughly
Mix warm water with one teaspoon of liquid dishwashing soap in a spray bottle and shake well. Spray the solution onto the furniture, scrub moldy spots with a soft-bristled brush (such as an old toothbrush), and wipe away excess liquid or suds with a rag. Finish by drying the cleaned areas with a fresh towel.
If the mold is only surface-level, this method may suffice. If not, proceed to the next step.
Apply vinegar spray
Empty and rinse your spray bottle (or use a fresh one), then fill it with a 50-50 mix of warm water and distilled white vinegar. Spray the solution onto the moldy areas, allow it to dry for an hour, and wipe the surfaces with a damp cloth followed by a dry towel.
Extra steps to consider
If the mold persists, you might need to apply a borax solution or even sand and refinish the wooden furniture.
