Among common household chores, mopping floors often gets postponed time and again. The effort feels wasted when footprints appear almost immediately after the surface dries.
For those with unsealed concrete flooring in basements or garages, regular cleaning might seem unnecessary or low on the priority list. However, if the need arises to tackle these tough, untreated surfaces, here’s a step-by-step approach to get the job done.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Cleaning Unsealed Concrete Floors
Due to the inherent porosity of unsealed concrete, floors made from this material can absorb liquids during floods or spills, leading to stubborn stains if not addressed promptly. Additionally, any cracks, grooves, or uneven surfaces provide a perfect hiding spot for dirt and dust.
While flood cleanup is a separate discussion, our focus today is on cleaning unsealed concrete floors when they’re dry. Here’s how to proceed:
Remove debris
In the absence of a shop vac, a broom and dustpan can effectively clear larger debris from the floor—items that might harm a standard vacuum cleaner.
Sweep thoroughly
With the larger debris cleared, use your shop vac or household vacuum to meticulously remove any lingering dust and dirt. Utilize attachments if needed to ensure a thorough clean.
Address the stains
If you encounter any stubborn stains, this is the ideal moment to tackle them. Consider these effective methods:
Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide: Combine these to form a paste, apply it to the stain, and scrub vigorously with a firm-bristled brush. If the stain persists, reapply the paste and allow it to sit for 30 minutes before scrubbing again.
Tide (or a similar powdered detergent): Mix the detergent with water to create a paste. Dampen the floor first, apply the paste, scrub with a brush, and rinse with clean water.
White vinegar: Pour vinegar over rust stains, let it sit for at least 30 minutes, scrub with a stiff-bristled brush, and rinse thoroughly.
Liquid dish soap: Apply directly or dilute with warm water, scrub the stain, and rinse clean.
Clean the floor thoroughly
Prepare a mop and bucket, then choose one of the following cleaning solutions to mix:
Combine baking soda (1/2 cup) with a large bucket of warm water
Mix liquid dish soap (2 tsp) and white vinegar (1 cup) into one gallon of warm water
Blend Tide [or another powdered laundry detergent] (1/3 cup) into one gallon of warm water
Mop the floor first with the cleaning solution, then follow up with a rinse using clean, warm water. Use a towel to dry any pooled water, or allow the floor to air dry naturally.
