The spinal cord is protected by the vertebrae, but improper handling can cause further harm. When transporting the cat, gently place it on a flat surface, such as a board, to ensure safe delivery to the vet.
Follow these essential tips to safely transport a cat suffering from a spinal injury:
Step 1: When using a sturdy board or thick cardboard:
Step 1a: Position two or three fabric strips or ropes beneath the board, ensuring they avoid the area where the cat's neck will be placed.
Step 1b: Gently support the cat by placing one hand under its chest and the other under its hindquarters, then carefully lift or slide it onto the board.
Step 1c: Secure the cat to the board using the strips or ropes to prevent any movement or falling during transport.
Step 1d: Carefully take the cat to the vet for immediate medical attention.
