
There are many ways to "win" an argument that rely solely on manipulation, aggression, or mistreating the other party. In an age where opinions are starkly divided and discussions are often heated, the idea of having constructive, thoughtful debates seems almost impossible.
While numerous techniques can be used to "win" an argument, true advancement comes from methods that emphasize mutual understanding and respect. These are some approaches you can use when you genuinely wish to engage in a meaningful conversation and come to a deeper understanding with others.
Set clear boundaries and expectations
Depending on the tone of the conversation, it could be beneficial to establish some fundamental ground rules. Before jumping into controversial topics, propose these guidelines to the other person:
Refrain from personal attacks or name-calling
Ensure everyone takes turns speaking without interruptions
Commit to staying respectful, even during disagreements
Agree to take breaks if emotions escalate
Having these guidelines in place can foster a more positive and productive environment throughout the discussion.
Pledge to listen actively
Before entering any debate, make a conscious decision to genuinely listen to the other person. Active listening goes beyond simply waiting for your turn to talk. It involves fully focusing on the speaker and trying to grasp their viewpoint, even if you disagree. Rather than immediately formulating counterarguments, ask questions for clarification and paraphrase what you've understood to ensure you're on the same page. Use "I" statements
This approach remains a classic for good reason. Frame your points with "I" statements rather than using accusatory "you" language. To paraphrase every family therapist I've encountered, this method:
Accepts responsibility for your own emotions and opinions
Minimizes defensiveness from the other party
Maintains the focus on your own viewpoint, rather than attacking theirs
For instance, instead of saying, "You're completely wrong about this," you could say, "I have a different perspective on this issue, and here's why..."
Place curiosity ahead of conviction
I've written previously about my belief in prioritizing curiosity over performance during conversations. Similarly, approach any debate or disagreement with a sincere desire to understand, not just to defend your viewpoint. Ask yourself:
What might I be overlooking in their perspective?
What experiences have influenced their views?

I understand—if you're debating whether it's harmful to claim that immigrants in Ohio are eating housepets, it might be hard to stay open-minded. However, debates often stall when individuals fixate only on their positions, instead of exploring the underlying motivations. Try to identify the core concerns that drive each side’s argument. This may reveal surprising areas of agreement and create opportunities for resolution.
Similarly, approach the debate with a genuine openness to alter your views if presented with strong evidence or persuasive arguments. Even if you don't end up changing your mind, this approach promotes a more meaningful and constructive conversation.
Develop empathy
Make a deliberate effort to empathize with the other person's viewpoint. Strive to understand not only their logical arguments but also the emotional significance they attach to the issue. Acknowledging their emotions can significantly strengthen rapport and promote a more productive conversation.
Distinguish between facts and interpretations
In any debate, it's essential to separate objective facts from personal interpretations. Be clear about which is which in your own arguments, and request clarification when the other person presents information that muddles the distinction. This approach helps keep disagreements focused on interpretations and opinions rather than fundamental facts—because if the other person in the conversation dismisses the facts entirely, your real challenge will be determining whether any common ground exists, and it may not be achievable.

It’s not always simple, especially when tackling deeply held convictions or highly emotional subjects. However, by committing to these principles, you set the stage for more thoughtful, effective, and ultimately rewarding conversations. Keep in mind, the aim isn't to win against the other person, but to deepen understanding and collaborate in finding better solutions together.
