While criticism is often unwelcome, it shouldn't be. Constructive feedback is an excellent tool for self-improvement. To enhance the quality of feedback you receive and your response to it, always reply with a sincere “Thank you.”
As highlighted by business blog Inc., the process of giving and receiving criticism can be uncomfortable for everyone involved. The critic may feel harsh, while the recipient might perceive it as a reprimand. Expressing gratitude for the feedback signals to both parties that this is a constructive exchange, not a negative one:
Offering constructive criticism can be difficult. Show your professionalism by thanking your boss or colleague for their honesty and professionalism when providing feedback. Seek clarification if needed, and express appreciation for their input.
Naturally, this approach applies only to constructive criticism, not to someone being unnecessarily harsh. Differentiating between the two is a separate challenge. However, when someone provides valuable feedback, demonstrate openness rather than defensiveness, and consider their advice thoughtfully (instead of simply saying “I’m sorry”).
