After finalizing her divorce from Sebastian Bear-McClard, Emily shared on Instagram how she transformed her engagement ring into two ‘divorce rings’ as a symbol of independence. The trend is gaining traction, with jewelers now adding divorce rings to their product collections.
We consulted with a jewelry expert to dive deeper into this trend, exploring what it’s all about, how to find the perfect style, and the best ways to flaunt it.
What exactly are divorce rings?
Rachel Akmakjian, Director of Jeweler Relations at BriteCo and Graduate Gemologist, explains, 'Engagement and wedding rings are traditionally symbols of the bond between partners. ‘Divorce rings,’ however, are a way to signify the end of a marriage and embrace newfound independence.'
Akmakjian further notes, 'Engagement and wedding rings often carry a lower resale value when connected to a divorce or breakup, which is frequently why people attempt to sell a former ring.' Nevertheless, this new trend has 'shifted the narrative' by reimagining the jewelry into something new with a more positive and empowering meaning.
Guidance for Selecting a Divorce Ring
Divorce rings come in a variety of designs and interpretations, shaped by the individual wearing them. Akmakjian shares, 'People commonly transform the stones from their old ring into a modern fashion piece.' Women may decide to wear it on their ring finger or opt for a different finger or hand.
While engagement rings signify commitment and unity, divorce rings stand for 'empowerment, closure, or simply a way to mark a new chapter in one’s life,' according to Akmakjian.
She emphasizes the importance of choosing a design that aligns with your personal style. 'Select something that fits seamlessly into your daily routine, as these rings are meant to serve as a constant reminder of new beginnings.'
When searching for a divorce ring, Akmakjian recommends finding a local jeweler or online shop that 'specializes in custom work' to ensure they have the expertise needed to expertly transform a ring.
How to Style Your Divorce Ring
'The best way to showcase your new piece is by wearing it every day,' Akmakjian advises. She also adds that 'jewelry is an adornment' meant to be noticed, inviting curiosity about its meaning.
Consider coordinating your everyday jewelry collection to complement your divorce ring, as you'll likely wear it often. For example, if the ring setting is yellow gold, think about adding gold necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and other rings to create a cohesive look.
Like Ratajkowski, you can also flaunt your new piece online. 'Sharing it on social media is a great way to spread the word and receive encouragement from your network,' Akmakjian suggests.
