You’ve likely encountered the 'golden rule' before, but it’s not always the best approach when you want to truly radiate charm. That’s where the 'platinum rule' steps in.
While the golden rule suggests treating others the way you wish to be treated, Travis Bradberry from The Good Men Project proposes a more effective strategy for building likability:
The Golden Rule—treating others as you wish to be treated—has a significant flaw: it assumes everyone wants the same treatment. It overlooks the fact that people are motivated by different needs... The Platinum Rule—treating others the way they want to be treated—fixes that issue.
You’re not flattering them or seeking to gain favor, you’re simply showing respect by catering to their individuality. As Bradberry advises, if someone enjoys public recognition, offer it to them. But if they prefer to avoid attention, make sure they don’t feel uncomfortable. While the golden rule is a useful starting point, remember the platinum rule when you learn how someone prefers to be treated. They'll appreciate you much more for it.
