We consulted experts to understand this gardening tip better and how to apply it properly to help your plants reach their maximum growth potential.
How Does Epsom Salt Benefit Plants?
"Epsom salt, or magnesium sulfate, is a widely-used garden solution that restores crucial nutrients such as magnesium and sulfur to the soil," Omelchenko explains. "Magnesium is essential for photosynthesis as a component of the chlorophyll molecule, while sulfur is necessary for producing amino acids, vitamins, proteins, and carbohydrates. The need for Epsom salt depends on the condition of your soil and plants."
Reasons to Use Epsom Salt in Your Garden
Heinrich, a horticulturist and botanical designer, states that plants require six primary nutrients and 11 secondary nutrients to stay healthy and flourish. "If you have fertile soil that's regularly enriched with organic compost and manure," he says, "you likely won't need to add any synthetic fertilizers, as the soil already contains everything your plants need to grow robustly."
However, Heinrich notes that if your soil lacks nutrients, you might need to supplement it with the three main macronutrients—nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK)—as well as the secondary macronutrients, magnesium, sulfur, and potassium. "Epsom salt, or magnesium sulfate, provides two of these secondary macronutrients," he adds.
"Epsom salt enhances your plants' ability to absorb other nutrients from the soil," he explains. "This results in healthier foliage and can even boost the flavor of your fruits and vegetables, making them sweeter and more nutrient-dense."
Advantages of Applying Epsom Salt to Plants
Omelchenko highlights several benefits of using Epsom salt. For instance, if a plant lacks magnesium, its leaves may turn pale and yellow, a condition called chlorosis. Epsom salt can prevent this by supplying the required magnesium. By boosting chlorophyll production, it also helps foliage appear greener and more vibrant. Some gardeners also observe that Epsom salt enhances flower and fruit yields.
She further notes that a sulfur deficiency can disrupt the production of proteins, carbohydrates, and other essential plant compounds. "Sulfur is a component of enzymes and other substances crucial for nitrogen absorption, and its absence can hinder nitrogen metabolism," she says. "This can lead to chlorosis caused by nitrogen deficiency and slow down growth rates."
She adds, "Epsom salt can raise sulfur levels, promoting more vigorous plant growth and development. Moreover, sulfur improves crop quality by enhancing the protein and oil content in fruits."
Heinrich explains that if you have a new garden area with soil that hasn't been enriched with natural nutrients and minerals, Epsom salt is an excellent way to provide your plants with essential nutrients they need to grow well.
Epsom salt is also helpful for vegetables grown in pots. "Tomatoes and other vegetables can deplete soil nutrients quickly in containers, which is why adding Epsom salt and other water-soluble fertilizers is crucial to maintaining the health and vitality of potted plants," he explains.
Drawbacks of Applying Epsom Salt to Plants
"While Epsom salt may appear to be a miracle solution, it has potential downsides and should be used carefully," Omelchenko warns. She adds, "If your soil already has sufficient magnesium, adding Epsom salt can disrupt the balance by hindering the uptake of other minerals like calcium and potassium. Overuse of Epsom salt can cause salinization, which harms plant health by making it harder for them to absorb water and nutrients."
She further states, "This can result in symptoms of drought stress, nutrient deficiencies, and, in extreme cases, plant death. Overusing magnesium sulfate can also pollute nearby water sources."
Heinrich cautions that excessive use of Epsom salt in your garden can hinder vegetable growth or even cause damage. "Apply [Epsom salt] sparingly, no more than twice during the growing season. Once your soil is enriched with organic compost and manure, you may only need to use Epsom salt once around mid-season," he advises.
How to Identify If Your Plants Require Epsom Salt
While Epsom salt offers benefits, it's essential to confirm your plants truly need it before application. Omelchenko recommends conducting a soil analysis for this purpose. Soil tests reveal details about pH levels and nutrient composition.
She also suggests checking your plants for magnesium deficiency symptoms. "Watch for signs like interveinal chlorosis, where light green or yellow spots and streaks appear between the green leaf veins," she explains. "Leaf edges may also turn yellow, orange, red, or dark red."
She adds, "Magnesium deficiency symptoms typically start on older leaves and gradually affect younger leaves and other plant parts."
How to Apply Epsom Salt to Plants?
If your plants require Epsom salt, how should you use it? There are several methods to apply it effectively. However, before using Epsom salt, ensure it doesn’t contain any additives harmful to plants. Opt for plain, unscented Epsom salt suitable for both internal and external plant use.
With that in mind, here are some straightforward application techniques recommended by experts:
Foliar Spray Application
Omelchenko suggests using Epsom salt as a foliar spray, where the solution is applied directly to the leaves. This approach is especially useful for rapidly addressing magnesium deficiency in plants.
"To create an Epsom salt solution, dissolve 1–2 tablespoons of Epsom salt in one gallon of water. This mixture can be sprayed on leaves or used to water the soil," she explains. "Keep in mind that different plants have varying leaf structures. Some have thicker protective layers, while others are more fragile and prone to damage from treatments."
She adds, "For foliar sprays, test the solution on a few leaves of each plant before applying it to the entire plant. This helps you check for any adverse reactions, such as chemical burns, which show up as yellow or light brown dry patches. If you notice these signs, dilute the solution with more water. Apply this treatment once a month."
Incorporate It Into the Soil
Another way to use Epsom salt is by mixing it with water and applying it to the soil. Omelchenko advises against sprinkling dry Epsom salt directly onto the soil, as it can cause salinization and chemical burns. Dissolving it in water ensures the roots absorb magnesium and sulfur efficiently, supporting healthy growth without damaging the plants.
"Avoid overuse or high concentrations to prevent chemical burns and other issues," Omelchenko notes. "As with other fertilizers, water the plant thoroughly a few hours before application to protect the roots, which are more sensitive in dry soil conditions."
Heinrich points out that the biggest mistake gardeners make with Epsom salt is overusing it. "Mix just one tablespoon of Epsom salt into a gallon of water and apply it to the root zone of crops like cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplants, melons, and other vegetables," he advises. "This should only be done twice annually: once at planting and once midway through the growing season."
He adds, "Feeding your plants every other week or multiple times a month, as some gardening experts suggest, can disrupt the plants' ability to move nutrients from the roots to the leaves and fruits effectively."
Just like seasoning food, you don’t want to overdo it with Epsom salt. By following these expert recommendations, you can give your plants the perfect amount of Epsom salt to help them thrive and look vibrant quickly.
