If you're looking to foster trust or simply improve your charisma, asking the right questions is crucial. Questions demonstrate that you are actively listening and engaged. However, to truly understand someone, you must ask questions that truly matter.
We've previously discussed how questions can help build rapport. But if you take this advice too literally and simply ask random questions or interrogate someone, it won't get you far. As Carl Richards notes in a recent podcast, the key lies in asking meaningful questions:
The difference lies in the quality of the experience, and in our work as financial advisors, it's largely about the quality of the questions we ask. My friend and mentor, John Bowen, always said that people judge you by the quality of your questions. In my view, the quickest way to gain trust on a personal level is by asking insightful questions and truly listening. This approach is about treating others as you'd want to be treated—asking great questions and listening intently.
Richards also highlights an important point about seeking advice through questions. The better the questions you ask, the more valuable your answers will be. When it comes to social interactions, it's about empathy: seeking to understand the other person's perspective to connect on a deeper level.
