Sticking to a budget can be tricky. One major reason is that we often underestimate how much we're actually spending. A simple solution: take a conservative approach and overestimate your expenses.
I learned this tip from my parents growing up. 'Always round up your expenses,' my dad would say, 'because it's better to end up spending less than expected than more.'
Personal finance blogger Femme Frugality advises something similar. Her top budgeting rule? 'Budget Generously. Spend Wisely.' Here's her reasoning:
Budgeting generously means if you anticipate spending $75 on gas this month, you plan for $100. It’s about ensuring you always have a buffer, never inflating the numbers unrealistically to match your income.
When you review your numbers, you'll know if you need to work harder to boost your income. This is much better than realizing at the end of the month that you should've worked more, only to find yourself without enough to cover the essentials.
Naturally, spending wisely involves saving whenever possible and staying aware of your spending habits. It’s a straightforward rule to follow for a more effective budget. Be sure to check out her full post linked below.
