It’s crucial to note that all figures provided are estimates. The exact number of infections and their speed remain uncertain. Even advanced mathematical models can’t account for every variable. Health policy expert Andy Slavitt, former director of Medicare, Medicaid, and ACA systems, advises focusing on overarching principles rather than fixating on specific numbers.
To address this uncertainty, the ProPublica tool evaluates nine distinct scenarios, calculating the probable availability of hospital beds for each. For instance, here’s the data for Pittsburgh, PA, my hometown. Under the most extended timeframe and lowest infection rate, the situation remains stable. However, other scenarios present more urgent challenges.
