A significant concern as COVID-19 cases increase is the potential strain on healthcare facilities. This is why efforts to 'flatten the curve' are essential, ensuring the virus spreads at a manageable rate for the healthcare system.
Propublica has introduced a new tool to compare the capacity of health systems in various regions. By entering your location, the tool provides insights into available hospital beds and projections on the virus's spread.
It’s crucial to note that all figures provided are estimates. The exact number of infections and their speed remain uncertain. Even advanced mathematical models can’t account for every variable. Health policy expert Andy Slavitt, former director of Medicare, Medicaid, and ACA systems, advises focusing on overarching principles rather than fixating on specific numbers.
To address this uncertainty, the ProPublica tool evaluates nine distinct scenarios, calculating the probable availability of hospital beds for each. For instance, here’s the data for Pittsburgh, PA, my hometown. Under the most extended timeframe and lowest infection rate, the situation remains stable. However, other scenarios present more urgent challenges.

I’m sharing this tool not to incite panic, but to provide a clear visual understanding of the scenarios public health and policy experts are analyzing. Enhancing our capacity to handle patients will benefit everyone, whether they have COVID-19 or other medical needs. Strategies like postponing elective surgeries or constructing new clinics could help. While specifics are still emerging, it’s crucial for decision-makers to begin planning now.
