Publishers annually list the top diets for weight reduction. Often, this process feels like an intellectual exercise, as it ignores the most critical element: adherence. Instead, steer clear of generic advice by using the Diet Index Enjoyability Total—or DIET.
The Diet Index Enjoyability Total (DIET) score is a conceptual metric developed by Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, the creator of Weighty Matters and the head of one of Canada's largest obesity clinics. Dr. Freedhoff observed that a diet's enjoyment level is crucial for long-term success. He explains:
"If you dislike the lifestyle you lead while losing weight, you're almost guaranteed to regain it. In simpler terms: weight lost through misery is likely to return."
This assertion is well-supported. A recent meta-analysis (a review of multiple studies) published in The Journal of the American Medical Association reveals that adherence to a diet—more than factors like low or high carbohydrate intake—was the primary determinant of its effectiveness.
It appears that all diets are effective; the real challenge lies in discovering one you can maintain. To assess a diet's long-term viability, use Dr. Freedhoff's checklist below and rate its enjoyability on a scale of 1-10 before committing to it:
Hunger
Cravings
Feelings of fullness/satisfaction
Need to cook special meals for other family members
Ability to dine out with friends and family without restrictions
Energy levels and overall sense of wellness
Complexity of the diet's rules and restrictions
Dietary variety compared to repetitiveness
Strictness of dietary rules (e.g., banned foods or food groups and their effect on daily life)
Cost of following the diet (e.g., pricey foods, supplements, etc.)
No diet is flawless, and there are always compromises between different factors. For instance, a diet might offer great flexibility, but the wide range of options can make it more complicated. Nevertheless, this checklist is incredibly helpful for identifying a diet that suits you in the long term. Before starting a new diet, use this checklist to evaluate its sustainability.
