Back in 1924, the Akron Candy Company in Ohio introduced a small, round hard candy on a stick. When it came time to choose a name, sales manager I.C. Bahr picked 'Dum Dums,' believing it was a word easy for kids to say. Simple, vibrant, and affordable, Dum Dums quickly became a beloved candy brand.
In 1953, Ohio’s Spangler Candy Company, known for its iconic Circus Peanuts and chocolates, acquired the brand. Over time, Spangler expanded the Dum Dums flavor lineup to include unique varieties like Buttered Popcorn, Cotton Candy, and Bubblegum. In 2006, the company marked its centennial by unveiling two exciting new flavors – pink lemonade and cherry cola.
THE MYSTERY BEHIND THE FLAVOR
Some Dum Dums feature wrappers with question marks instead of the usual flavor label. This clever marketing move not only streamlined the production process but also added an element of fun for candy lovers. The Mystery Flavor pop is the result of two different flavors merging when the end of one batch meets the start of the next. Instead of halting production to clean the machines between flavors, Spangler embraced the mix and turned it into a surprise treat. By keeping the lines running smoothly, the Mystery Flavor pops became an exciting, unexpected delight.
