Since its debut with Toy Story in 1995, Pixar has revolutionized animation, creating numerous timeless classics. Many have passionate opinions about the best Pixar movie, often shaped by childhood memories or repeated viewings. Former Cars fans, we acknowledge you.
Nostalgia isn’t always a factor in picking a favorite Pixar film. For instance, many Coco fans were already adults when it premiered in 2017.
Objectively evaluating Pixar films, known for reducing even the most reserved viewers to tears (yes, Up opening scene, we’re talking about you), is no simple feat. While Rotten Tomatoes isn’t flawless for objective movie assessments, it’s intriguing to compare personal opinions with the Tomatometer. Below, all 27 Pixar movies are ranked by their critics’ scores on Rotten Tomatoes, with ties broken by the number of reviews.
During the pandemic, with underwhelming box office results (like 2022’s Lightyear) and streaming releases that didn’t gain much traction (such as 2021’s Luca), many have questioned if Pixar’s golden touch is fading. Disney, its parent company, recently revealed plans to cut about 14 percent of Pixar’s workforce (around 175 employees) to focus on quality rather than quantity.
While newer Pixar films may not have made the same cultural impact as classics like Ratatouille, critics still rate them highly: Luca holds a 91 percent score, Turning Red (2022) boasts 95 percent, and even Lightyear is Certified Fresh at 74 percent. The only Pixar film not Certified Fresh is Cars 2, released in 2011.
