If you’ve had a COVID infection recently, lingering symptoms may still be affecting you. For many, COVID can evolve into long COVID, leading to a variety of symptoms including respiratory, neurological, digestive, and musculoskeletal problems that can persist for weeks, months, or even years. Headaches have been reported as one of the most common symptoms following a COVID infection.
“COVID-19-related headaches can range from a mild, dull ache to a severe, debilitating pain,” says Joy Mitra, a neurology expert at Houston Methodist Hospital. “The duration of these headaches also differs between individuals.”
COVID infection often intensifies pre-existing headaches
If you're already susceptible to headaches, a COVID infection may exacerbate the problem. “Individuals with pre-existing migraines or those experiencing significant stress in their daily routines tend to suffer the most severe and prolonged headaches, even up to six months after testing negative for COVID,” says Mitra. Chronic conditions, like high blood pressure, may also increase the likelihood of headaches following a COVID infection.
Strategies for Managing Your Headaches
According to Mitra, general strategies for managing post-COVID headaches include maintaining a balanced diet, getting sufficient rest, staying hydrated, and managing stress. These can help reduce the intensity or frequency of your headaches. For particularly severe headaches, pain management may involve medication, though it's important to use it cautiously, as overuse could result in a rebound headache. It’s typically recommended to limit headache medication to no more than twice a week. If you experience more frequent headaches, it's crucial to consult a doctor for long-term pain management solutions.
When to Consult a Doctor About Your Headaches
If your headaches are intense or occurring frequently, it’s advisable to seek medical attention. You should also consult a doctor if you have underlying conditions that could worsen your headaches, such as high blood pressure, stress disorders, insomnia, or if you’re experiencing symptoms of brain fog. Mitra recommends being as detailed as possible about the frequency, duration, and location of your headaches, as this will aid your doctor in providing an accurate diagnosis.
