What Is Eyebrow Threading?
Eyebrow threading is a technique for removing facial hair in which a fine thread of cotton or polyester is skillfully used to eliminate unwanted hair from the eyebrow region.
“The thread is doubled, twisted, and then rolled over the hairs, trapping them and pulling them out from the follicle,” says JJ Salazar, a brow specialist and the founder of Bangin’ Brows, a high-end brow service in Chicago, Illinois. “This method allows for precise eyebrow shaping and can remove several hairs at once, resulting in either a sharp, defined look or a more natural finish.”
Salazar mentions that there are three primary techniques for eyebrow threading:
- Hand Method: In this technique, a loop of thread is held between the fingers to remove unwanted hairs.
- Mouth Method: The thread is anchored in the mouth while the hands perform the threading motion. This is known for being the quickest and most accurate, and is arguably the most widely used technique.
- Neck Method: In this technique, the thread is kept taut between the fingers and secured under the neck, offering precise control during the process.
Each method employs a different technique to manipulate the thread and achieve the desired results. Ultimately, it’s the threading expert’s choice to decide which technique works best for them.

Does Eyebrow Threading Hurt?
Let’s be upfront: since hair is being pulled out from the skin, eyebrow threading is not exactly a pain-free experience. However, it excels at removing fine hairs and providing highly precise shaping.
“Although removing several hairs at once may not be the most comfortable, it does deliver a smooth, clean finish and is far quicker than tweezing,” explains Salazar. She also suggests that threading could be a better option than waxing for those with sensitive skin. This is because waxing has an exfoliating effect, while threading doesn’t.
“It’s all about striking the perfect balance between pain and reward, right?” Salazar remarks.
How Much Does Eyebrow Threading Cost?
The price of eyebrow threading generally ranges from $15 to $50, depending on factors like location, salon choice, the experience of the threader, and demand, as well as any additional services you choose. A tip of 15% to 20% of the total cost is also recommended.
What Can You Expect at an Appointment?
An eyebrow threading session is usually a quick and efficient process. “Whether you’re just touching up your brows or going for a detailed makeover, an appointment typically lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on your brow needs,” says Salazar.
The threading expert will inquire about the look you're aiming for (it helps to bring some photo examples) and evaluate your current brow shape. After that, they’ll expertly use a cotton or polyester thread to achieve your desired style. As mentioned earlier, this hair removal method can be somewhat uncomfortable, much like many others.
You might experience some redness and slight puffiness afterward, but practitioners typically apply a calming gel to soothe the skin. The best part? You’ll leave with refreshed, beautifully shaped brows.
