It’s also a great moment to reflect and bid farewell to trends that have lost their relevance or appeal. This applies across the board, but today we’re focusing on beauty trends that experts believe we’re leaving behind as we move into 2025.
1. Laminated Brows
A critical look at brow blindness made us rethink our eyebrow routines, with overly laminated brows facing significant criticism.
“The trend of using strong adhesives to fix your eyebrows firmly in place is fading. It’s not only harmful to your brows but can also block hair follicles and lead to acne,” explains Natalie Dresher, a renowned makeup artist for celebrities and influencers. She recommends opting for softer, well-groomed brows that appear more natural. For those who prefer a bit of shine, she advises using a minimal amount of brow gel to lightly set them in place.
2. Coquette Makeup
“The coquette makeup trend, characterized by pink tones on cheeks, lips, and eyes along with delicate lashes, brought a nostalgic vibe when it emerged early last year,” notes celebrity makeup artist Bryan Cantor. He predicts the rise of the “blonzer” trend, which involves using bronzer or bronze-blush tones instead of the pink shades popular in 2024, to achieve a radiant, sun-kissed appearance.
3. Chiseled Contour
Contouring, once a dominant trend during its peak in the 2010s, is officially being retired, with the final deadline set for December 31, 2024, to abandon the overly sculpted aesthetic.
“As we move into 2025, heavily contoured cheeks and sharp lines are fading away. This style appears too artificial in an era where soft, glowing skin is taking center stage,” says Angie Warren, a makeup artist and esthetician based in Columbus. “Focus on achieving radiant skin with generous blush and a touch of creamy highlighter on the face’s high points to add dimension without creating a hollowed effect.”
4. Brat Green
Brat green made a significant cultural impact, and while we’ll cherish the memories, it’s time to set the vibrant shade aside for now. “Although we still adore Charli xcx and her music, the Brat Green trend has run its course,” Cantor explains. “Swap out bold green eyeshadows for metallic tones. Whether you opt for a subtle sweep from lash to brow without liner or go bold with highly pigmented shades and smudged black liner, gold, bronze, copper, and chrome are the new go-to choices.”
5. Clumpy Spider Lashes
It’s surprising that clumpy spider lashes were ever a sought-after trend in 2024, but this fad is quickly being replaced by its opposite.
“Rather than piling on thick, clumpy mascara, consider ditching it entirely,” Cantor suggests, pointing to the emerging ghost lashes trend that’s gaining popularity. “Last season, models showcased bare lashes on runways, with styles varying from understated to dramatic.”
6. Blush-Infused Undereye Concealer
While beauty hacks are fun, the TikTok trend of blending blush into concealer went overboard, and it’s time to rethink it. Dresher notes that this trend often results in a sunburned or unwell appearance.
“Using a peachy pink color corrector beneath the right concealer shade to brighten and enhance the eye area is a timeless and elegant approach,” she explains. “I prefer a brighter undereye, so I recommend choosing a concealer one or two shades lighter.”
7. Neutral Pink/Nude Lips
If you’ve noticed the absence of vibrant lip colors in recent years, it’s because neutral tones took center stage. However, the era of muted lip shades is winding down, making way for richer, more saturated hues.
“While neutral lips enjoyed their time in the limelight, bold and deep lip colors are reclaiming their place,” Warren explains. “The focus is now on glowing, natural skin paired with a striking lip color. This trend emerged on spring runways, indicating it’s here to stay well beyond the winter months when darker lips typically dominate.”
The start of a new year offers the ideal opportunity to explore bold and unconventional lip shades.
8. Overly Glittered Décolleté
Sparkling necks, arms, and décolletage were a playful tribute to the ‘90s—often considered the golden age of body glitter—but 2025 calls for a more understated approach.
“Glitter sprays and shimmer lotions made a brief comeback, evoking memories of my dance recital days,” Dresher shares. You don’t need to abandon glitter entirely; just opt for a more refined application. “Choose a lotion with a delicate shimmer and focus on highlighting the collarbone or shoulders for a subtle, alluring, and moisturized effect.”
