With the resurgence of '90s and early 2000s trends, flare jeans have made a strong comeback. These jeans are slim through the thighs and knees before flaring out into a bell-shaped silhouette.
“I absolutely adore flared jeans,” says Brenda Cooper, an Emmy-winning fashion stylist. “They work wonders by making you appear taller and slimmer, and they flatter every body type, no matter your shape, size, weight, or height. Truly!”
The flattering effect is even more pronounced when paired with the perfect shoes for flare jeans. Whether you go for retro-style footwear (think platform shoes) or heeled boots to elongate your legs, there are numerous choices to complement the style.
1. Bold Chunky Sneakers
Jeans paired with sneakers is a timeless combination that’s ideal for a laid-back look. “The key is selecting the right sneakers to match the flare length and achieve a well-proportioned silhouette,” says stylist
2. Vintage Platform Shoes
Lean into that classic ‘70s vibe and step into a pair of retro platform shoes, either open or closed toe. “Pairing flared or bell-bottom jeans with 1970s-style platforms adds height and gives the illusion of longer legs,” Cooper explains. “Just make sure your flares are long enough to cover the shoes and hover a quarter-inch above the ground.”
3. Open-Toe Heels
Elevate your flare jeans with a pair of open-toed heels, then pair with a simple top, chic handbag, and sunglasses. The height of the heel creates the illusion of longer legs and prevents the hem of your jeans from dragging. Plus, your heels and toes will peek out for a stylish finishing touch.”
4. Block Heel Booties
Pairing block heel booties with flare jeans creates a stunning combination of effortless style. "The fullness of the flared bottom and the sleek silhouette of the boot create a chic contrast," St Clair explains. "The block heel’s chunky design also maintains balance against the pants' bottom-heavy look."
5. Metallic Pointed Heels
Add a touch of flair with metallic pointed heels. Peeking out from under the flare, they serve as both a striking accessory and the focal point of your outfit. These heels also prevent your pants from dragging while elongating your legs.
6. Platform Wedges
A popular choice to pair with flare jeans is the Espadrille-style platform wedge, according to Cooper. This offers a laid-back look without feeling too casual, unlike a regular sneaker. "To pull off a platform or wedge shoe with flared jeans, ensure that the jeans are long enough to cover the shoe with a slight quarter-inch gap from the ground," Cooper advises.
7. Heeled Mules
Looking to elevate your flare jeans? Consider heeled mules. "The smooth transition between the denim and the shoe prevents your foot from being overwhelmed by the fullness of the flare, while maintaining a stylish sandal feel," says St. Clair. Classic leather is a safe bet, but St. Clair also recommends experimenting with textures or patterns to add some flair and balance out the voluminous flare.
8. Black Heeled Boots
Whether opting for glossy black leather or matte suede, black heeled boots pair beautifully with flare jeans. "The heel gives you added height while remaining comfortable for all-day wear," says Cooper. If you choose suede and a dark jean, she explains that this creates a continuous, flattering line from the pants to the boots.
9. Blocky Ballerinas
For a chic look, go for classic Mary Janes. If you choose a cropped flare pant, like the one shown here, you'll get a glimpse of the iconic strappy design. Alternatively, chunky Mary Janes work well with both cropped and full-length pants.
