
With approximately 900,000 known insect species and a staggering global population of 10 quintillion, it's no wonder many insects share common traits. Grasshoppers and crickets, for instance, both possess powerful hind legs designed for leaping impressive distances. But what sets them apart?
Both crickets and grasshoppers fall under the Orthoptera order and share similar features, such as elongated legs and semi-rigid wings. However, upon closer examination, crickets have longer, slender antennae compared to the shorter ones of grasshoppers. Additionally, crickets are generally smaller, averaging around 2 inches, while grasshoppers can grow up to 4 inches. Another distinguishing feature is the placement of their ears: crickets hear through their forelegs, whereas grasshoppers have auditory organs on their abdomen.

Their methods of producing sound also differ. Crickets create noise by rubbing their wings together, whereas grasshoppers generate their melodies by using their legs to scrape against their wings.

The name 'cricket' originates from their distinctive chirping sound, which resembles the word 'cricket.' This sound serves multiple purposes, such as attracting partners and deterring competitors. Interestingly, humans can even estimate the temperature based on the rate of chirping: the faster the chirps, the higher the temperature.

The time of day can also help distinguish them. Grasshoppers are typically active during the day, while crickets are more likely to appear at dusk. Their diets differ as well: grasshoppers are strictly herbivorous, whereas certain cricket species may consume other insects.
Mating behaviors also set them apart. Female crickets often take a dominant role during mating, while female grasshoppers tend to be more submissive.
In terms of physical prowess, both are impressive. Grasshoppers can jump up to 30 inches, comparable to a human leaping the length of a football field. Spider crickets can achieve similar distances with their jumps.
Crickets are often considered more troublesome indoors, as they are drawn to light sources. Once inside, they can cause damage by chewing on fabrics and flooring. While they may bite humans, the bites are harmless and unlikely to break the skin. To prevent infestations, sealing cracks and entry points in the home is recommended.
What defines a locust? Essentially, locusts are grasshoppers that form swarms, but only specific grasshopper subspecies exhibit this behavior.
Confusion between crickets and grasshoppers is common, sometimes leading to mistaken identity. For instance, during a 1993 Elton John concert, a cricket swarm disrupted the performance, but some media outlets incorrectly labeled the intruders as grasshoppers.
