Winter 2025 trends focus on embracing the frosty vibe, with cold girl makeup featuring cool tones, rosy cheeks, classic red lips, and radiant metallics. Whether you're looking for a cozy après-ski glow or a festive holiday look, these trends will keep you glowing all season.
1. Icy Tones
Winter is the ideal time to embrace cooler tones, such as those found in cold girl makeup. 'Incorporate cool pinks and a touch of shimmer to create the illusion that you've just stepped out of a wind chill, in the best après-ski way,' explains Drita Paljevic, head makeup artist at Kevyn Aucoin Beauty. 'We aim to make it wearable for everyday looks, with a neutral '90s twist on the snow and ice-inspired styles that are trending on social media.'
2. Shiny Metallic Eyeshadow
Metallic eyeshadow is a major winter makeup trend for 2025. To avoid an outdated look, the key is subtlety in its application.
'For daytime looks, opt for a soft application, and for nighttime, go bolder,' suggests celebrity makeup artist Bryan Cantor. 'A sheer wash of metallic for the day pairs well, while evening calls for a more intense metallic look, paired with smudged black eyeliner for added drama.' He also recommends creating a winged liner with your metallic eyeshadow as a fantastic way to incorporate this trend into your routine.
3. Luminous Body Highlighter
In the past decade, there’s been a growing focus on treating skin from the neck down—think sheet masks for the décolletage, silky body serums, and retinol-infused body creams. Now, the trend is shifting toward applying makeup to the body as well. 'Fun and carefree is the vibe,' says Kate Johnson, editorial and bridal makeup artist. 'Are we feeling the chic '90s comeback? Absolutely! Hydrate with coconut oil and dust highlighter on the body's high points. Try highlighting your collarbone, shins, and gently on the cheeks.'
4. Rich Berry and Plum Hues
If you’re not into the cold tones, opt for a warmer palette with berry and plum shades. These colors naturally add warmth to the skin while still keeping that seasonal feel. 'These shades are bold but maintain a soft, wearable winter look that doesn’t overpower your makeup,' says Tamara Boyd, professional makeup artist. She especially loves using these shades on lips. 'Line your lips with a berry or plum lip liner for a defined outline, then apply the lipstick using your finger for a natural, stained effect.'
5. Fresh, Dewy Skin
Healthy, glowing skin is always in style, but during winter, keeping it hydrated is almost an Olympic sport. 'Matte makeup in dry weather can highlight every imperfection and wrinkle,' explains Johnson. 'Nothing says youth like a radiant glow.' Layer your skincare with toner, serum, and moisturizer, and choose a lightweight foundation that lets your skin's natural glow shine through. A hydrating mist will help keep the glow throughout the day, Johnson adds.
6. Dramatic Lips with Subtle Eyes
A bold lip is undeniably a winter makeup essential. 'Dark shades allow you to have fun with your look, but it's important to keep the eyes understated,' says Paljevic. 'Go for a stain or matte eyeshadow in soft shades like cream, beige, or light brown—this gives you the confidence to make a statement with your lips!'
7. Classic Red Lip
Red lips are set to dominate the winter season. 'While they are a holiday classic, the runways are showing that red lips will carry on through winter 2024 and into 2025,' says Cantor. 'To wear this trend, pick a red that suits your skin tone. For cool undertones, choose a blue-based red. For warm undertones, go for a yellow-toned red. If you have neutral undertones, any red will complement your skin.'
8. Glimmering Frosted Skin
If you’re not into the dewy skin look, you might prefer the frosted skin trend. 'Think cool-toned, frosty highlighters that give an ethereal glow,' says Boyd. 'To achieve this, start with a moisturizing primer to create a smooth foundation. Then, apply a lightweight skin tint with a natural radiant finish for that glowing effect. Afterward, use a cool-toned highlighter—either silver or icy pink—to add the frosted glow. Focus on the high points of your face, including your cheekbones, brow bones, nose bridge, and cupid's bow.'
