The modalities, which describe "a specific way in which something exists or is expressed," are less commonly understood, explains master astrologer Shannon Aganza, founder of MoonGathering astrology school. While elements reflect inherent traits, modalities focus on life's dynamics, representing "the natural laws of physics ... and how energy flows," she adds.

The three modalities — cardinal, fixed, and mutable — each include one zodiac sign from every element. This means cardinal encompasses a fire, earth, air, and water sign.

On the other hand, every element consists of three zodiac signs, each assigned a distinct modality. For instance, the earth element features a mutable, fixed, and cardinal sign.

Every zodiac sign is characterized by both a modality and an element (e.g., Virgo is mutable earth, Leo is fixed fire). Just as signs sharing the same element share traits, those with the same modality also have similarities.

The mutable signs include Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. The fixed signs consist of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius.

Cardinal Signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn

Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn are the four cardinal signs. They signify the start of each season (spring and fall equinoxes, summer and winter solstices).

"Cardinal energy is about beginnings and taking action," explains Aganza. "It’s about setting things in motion, creating realities, and driving purposeful change."

Cardinal signs exist to drive action and create change in this world. "They initiate and set things in motion," Aganza explains. "Fixed signs provide stability, while mutable signs adapt and receive."

Unlike fixed and mutable signs, cardinal signs thrive on freedom to launch new ventures and innovate. "However, don’t count on them for completion," she notes. Their energy combines the strength of fixed signs and the adaptability of mutable signs, but with a focus on forging new paths.

Aries (March 20-April 21)

As the zodiac’s first sign, Aries heralds the beginning of the astrological year and the onset of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Known for its intense cardinal energy, Aries is ruled by Mars, the planet of action and ambition, making it a fiery and competitive sign. The ram’s energy is particularly dynamic and forward-driven.

In astrology, spring symbolizes the self, and Aries governs the head and physical body, naturally ruling the first house of self. This makes it an ideal time to embark on self-improvement projects or fitness routines, aligning with the cosmic energy of renewal.

"Aries represents self-assertion and pioneering action," says Aganza. "It’s a sign of adventure, independence, and the spark that ignites change. However, its fiery nature can lead to impatience and aggression, so balance is key to avoid burnout."

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Cancer, the cardinal water sign, marks the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

Similar to other cardinal signs, Cancer possesses an initiating energy, but as a water sign, its drive is emotionally rooted. Water signs, including Pisces and Scorpio, are known for their sensitivity and emotional depth.

Cancer is ruled by the moon, which in astrology is considered a luminary rather than a planet. This lunar influence contributes to Cancer’s reputation for moodiness, as the crab is deeply affected by the moon’s shifting phases.

Aganza notes, "This sign fosters emotional security — as the first water element, it’s the source that sustains others."

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Libra, the cardinal air sign, heralds the start of fall, with its season beginning on the autumnal equinox.

As an air sign, Libras thrive on social interaction, and as a cardinal sign, they love to initiate gatherings. While air signs are generally sociable, Libra’s desire for connection and partnership is heightened, influenced by its ruling planet, Venus.

Libras are driven to find meaningful partnerships. Positioned opposite Aries (the sign of self) on the zodiac wheel, Libra focuses on the other, naturally governing the seventh house of partnerships. This makes Libra season an ideal time to start a new relationship or plan a wedding.

"Libra strives to create harmony and balance in all aspects of life," says Aganza. "It’s a sign that values beauty, fairness, and connection. When equilibrium is achieved, there’s a sense of aesthetic perfection and justice." La vie est belle in Libra’s world.

When unbalanced, Libras may seek external validation, struggle with indecision, or fall into people-pleasing or unnecessary debates.

Above all, this initiating air sign has a keen sense of "what’s required to bring harmony to a space or relationship," she explains.

Capricorn (Dec. 20-Jan. 19)

The last seasonal cycle begins with winter during Capricorn season, marking the final cardinal sign. As an earth sign, Capricorn is pragmatic, systematic, and deeply rooted in reality.

Positioned opposite Cancer on the zodiac wheel (which governs home and personal life), Capricorn is centered on career and public image, as it naturally rules the 10th house. This makes Capricorn season an ideal time to launch a business or make a significant career change.

Ruled by Saturn, Capricorn differs from Aquarius (a fixed air sign also ruled by Saturn) in its preference for traditional systems. It’s a sign that values structure and often follows rules for their own sake, as Aganza notes.

If Capricorn is prominent in your chart, you may embody or be drawn to traits like "structure, discipline, ambition, and focus," says Aganza. "Capricorn’s work ethic is unmatched, and it will tackle tasks others avoid simply because they need to be done."

Due to its heavy sense of responsibility, Capricorn can lean toward "pessimism, fear, rigidity, and self-criticism," she explains. "Avoid dwelling on the past or becoming overly cynical. You don’t need to conform to societal expectations to measure your worth."
