Standing outside a restaurant at 10:55 a.m., stomach growling, might make you feel a bit disheartened, as if you’ve failed to organize your meals like everyone else. However, the desire for an 11 a.m. lunch is common, and I’m here to encourage you to eat whenever you feel like it.
Michelle Ruiz at Bon Appétit consulted experts who confirmed that mid-morning hunger is completely normal, and you won’t be reprimanded by any imaginary lunch authorities for eating before noon. My personal experience aligns with this.
Nowadays, I wake up around 6 a.m., exercise, enjoy a coffee, and sometimes a protein shake. After dropping the kids off at school and starting my workday, I finally feel hungry. Why settle for typical “breakfast” foods when there’s delicious lunch waiting in the fridge? So, if I’m eating lunch by 10 a.m., so be it. A hearty lunch keeps me satisfied until mid-afternoon, when I can grab a snack.
If you aim to eat at socially conventional times like a typical person (fun fact: many of these “normal” individuals are just as hungry by noon as you are), here are some strategies to adjust your eating schedule:
Enjoy a substantial, satisfying breakfast during actual breakfast hours. Skip the quick bagel and opt for an actual sandwich or something rich in fats and proteins. Often, hunger strikes because we didn’t eat enough earlier.
Incorporate a mid-morning snack. Focus on fats and proteins—consider cheese, a hard-boiled egg, or trail mix.
Go ahead with an early lunch, but remember to plan for an afternoon snack to avoid spoiling your dinner plans.
In reality, your hunger depends largely on your wake-up time and eating habits. You can adjust your schedule if needed, but it’s completely normal to eat lunch early if you wake up or have breakfast early.
