Frozen cooked shrimp has become a go-to freezer item for many, offering a fast and easy way to add protein to dishes like salads, pastas, and more. But if you have some in your freezer, it's time to check the packaging.
This is because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded a recall initially issued in June 2021 on frozen cooked shrimp sold nationwide due to possible Salmonella contamination. Here's what you need to know.
Which type of shrimp is included in the recall?
The shrimp involved in the recall were distributed by Avanti Frozen Foods Pvt. Ltd, and include various sizes of frozen cooked, peeled, deveined shrimp (some packaged with cocktail sauce), sold in multiple unit sizes. These shrimp are being recalled due to potential Salmonella contamination.
As of August 13, there have been nine reports of Salmonella-related illnesses linked to these shrimp, according to the FDA. While not all brands of the recalled shrimp have been tied to Salmonella cases, both the FDA and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) chose to include them all in the recall as a precautionary measure.
What steps should you take if your shrimp is part of the recall?
The frozen shrimp products included in the recall were sold nationwide between November 2020 and May 2021, and were available at major retailers like Whole Foods, Target, Meijer, and Food Lion. This FDA webpage lists the specific items, brands, codes, and expiration dates of the recalled shrimp.
If you have purchased any of the recalled frozen shrimp, do not consume them. Return them to the store where you bought them. For inquiries, you can contact Avanti Frozen Foods Pvt.
