For over 5000 years, toilets have been crafted from materials like stone, porcelain, and even solid gold. Now, Woodio introduces the Block toilet, claimed to be the first flushable toilet made primarily from wood chips, as reported by dezeen.
With their speckled, natural hues, these toilets seamlessly blend into contemporary bathroom designs. Comprising 80% wood chips by volume, the remaining 20% is a mix of polyester and bioplastic resins, ensuring durability, water resistance, and a splinter-free experience.
WoodioHeadquartered in Finland, Woodio crafts bathtubs, wash basins, and other bathroom fixtures from its unique wood-based composite material. The company asserts that its products generate 99% fewer emissions than traditional porcelain alternatives. Unlike ceramics, which require high-temperature firing and contribute to substantial CO2 emissions, Woodio's materials eliminate the need for heating and consume less water and energy during production.
While calculating its carbon footprint, Woodio excludes the environmental impact of lumber sourcing. Additionally, the Block toilet cannot be recycled or composted due to its plastic content, necessitating disposal through incineration or landfills, which affects its ecological footprint. The company aims to transition to fully bio-based resins once production shifts to an industrial facility in the near future.
For those considering a wooden toilet for their home, the Block model is available starting at $825. It also offers a variety of color options, ensuring it doesn’t resemble a tree stump.
