Garbage disposals degrade over time and can break or get clogged if the wrong items are disposed of. Replacing the disposal is a straightforward plumbing job that will have your kitchen sink functioning like new in no time.
Start by disconnecting the power to your existing garbage disposal. Then, evaluate the tools needed to remove the pipes. Plastic slip nuts can be unscrewed by hand, but steel ones require slip joint pliers. A plastic container to catch any water and some rags are also handy.
Proceed by disconnecting the plumbing lines from the disposal. There should be an exit line at the bottom, a possible connection from another sink, and a line from the dishwasher.
Once the plumbing lines are fully disconnected, use the slotted tool (provided with the new disposal) to twist the disposal free from the sink. Next, use a screwdriver to remove the old mounting bracket and attach the new one.
Finally, twist the new garbage disposal onto the mounting bracket, reconnect the plumbing lines, plug in the disposal, and you're all set!
