The flowers emerge before the foliage. The dwarf fothergilla (Fothergilla gardenii), native to the southeastern United States, is a compact shrub, while the larger fothergilla (Fothergilla major), which is similar, can reach heights of up to ten feet. In early spring, the tips of its spreading branches are adorned with clusters of white, highly fragrant, petalless flowers, giving the shrub its characteristic bottlebrush appearance. Its rounded, somewhat irregular leaves appear later and are dark green, turning brilliant yellow, red, and orange before falling in autumn.
How to grow: This shrub thrives in acidic, peaty, sandy loam with adequate moisture and good drainage. While it can tolerate partial shade, it produces the best blooms in full sun.
Uses: The dwarf fothergilla is an ideal plant for borders, foundation plantings, and mass plantings. No pruning is necessary.
Scientific names: Species of Fothergilla
