The U.S. Postal Service's initiative to deliver free COVID tests directly to households is back. Starting today, you can head to COVIDTests.gov to order a complimentary set of four tests. These kits are designed to detect current variants and come with expiration dates extending through the end of 2024.
(For those in urgent need of a test, the COVID test website recommends reaching out to a HRSA-funded health center or an ICATT location nearby. Alternatively, tests can be purchased at pharmacies and various retail outlets if you're willing to pay.)
Am I eligible for free COVID tests if I previously received them?
Yes, this is another opportunity to receive free tests. Each household is eligible for one package of four tests, even if they have previously participated in the program.
When can I expect to receive the tests?
The exact timeline for the government to prepare and dispatch the tests is uncertain, but delivery will be swift once shipped. Most U.S. addresses will receive them via first class mail, while Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. territories, and APO/FPO/DPO addresses will get Priority Mail. Providing an email address during checkout will allow you to receive a shipment notification and tracking number.
Is there a shipping fee for the free COVID tests?
No, shipping is completely free. This service is fully covered by the U.S. government and the U.S. Postal Service.
Is it safe to use my remaining COVID tests in the meantime?
Maybe! Start by checking the expiration date on your old tests. If they’re still valid, you’re all set. If the date has passed, don’t discard them immediately. First, consult the FDA’s list of expiration date extensions for COVID tests.
Look up the brand name on that page. If the expiration date has been extended, you’ll find a link to a PDF. Use Control-F to search for the lot number in the document, and you’ll discover the updated expiration date. I have two different brands of tests from the last free distribution, and both were extended long enough to remain usable this winter.
Are these tests effective against current COVID variants?
Absolutely. While some tests are more effective than others against the currently circulating strains, the tests available through COVIDTests.gov are designed to detect the latest variants.
