
For those living with an anxiety disorder, the pandemic has likely intensified struggles. Even individuals who don’t usually experience anxiety are finding it hard to cope due to the overwhelming uncertainty and lack of control. No matter where you fall on this spectrum, a bit of support can make a world of difference—particularly when it’s available at no cost.
A few years back, my therapist suggested I try using an anxiety workbook. Packed with exercises and activities, it helped me explore the underlying causes of my anxiety and reframe my thought processes as a way to manage it. Over the past few weeks, I’ve turned back to this workbook to better understand my mental state and regain a sense of control.
I recently discovered a free, downloadable workbook tailored to managing anxiety during the coronavirus pandemic. Created by The Wellness Society—a group dedicated to supporting those who can’t access traditional therapy—this resource was developed by mental health experts to tackle the unique challenges of living through this global crisis.
The workbook is divided into multiple sections, each featuring unique exercises such as managing your information intake, identifying areas within your control, mastering thought-challenging techniques, and discovering effective distractions. Many of these tools closely resemble those found in my standard anxiety workbook.
Personally, I found the thought-challenging exercises to be the most impactful. These exercises encourage you to critically examine beliefs you consider absolute truths, which often turn out to be significant contributors to your anxiety. For example, I tend to catastrophize—assuming the worst-case scenario is inevitable in any situation. This mindset is unhelpful at the best of times, but even more so during a global pandemic.
