Set Up Your Facebook Profile
All you'll need is your name, gender, birthday, and an email address. Go to www.facebook.com and look on the right side of the page under the 'sign up' section. Fill in your details and hit the green 'sign up' button.
Once you've entered the captcha to prove you're not a robot, Facebook will prompt you to search for friends. It's a good idea to do this now, but feel free to skip it and come back later. If you choose to search, Facebook will check your email contacts for anyone who is also on Facebook. Select the ones you'd like to add. (Here’s something to think about: It's a good time to decide whether to ‘friend’ coworkers or not.)
Now it's time to create your profile. Generally speaking, the more thorough your profile, the easier it will be for others to find you, and for you to find them. Take your time filling in details like your high school, college, and workplace information, as prompted.
Next, as prompted, upload a photo of yourself by either choosing an image from your computer or by snapping a photo using your device's webcam. Typically, people choose casual images that clearly show their face, but your profile picture can be anything you like — as long as it's PG-13 or lower.
Now it’s time to browse through your profile and add any details you think are fun (click the pencil icon to "edit profile" at the top right). On Facebook, most users enjoy expressing their personalities. As you explore different sections, like 'philosophy,' 'activities and interests,' and 'sports,' try to be genuine and precise. Over time, your Facebook profile will truly reflect who you are.
Before you can start sharing content on Facebook, you need to verify your account via email. Just check the inbox of the email address you provided during sign-up, open the message from Facebook, and click the 'complete sign-up' link.
And there you have it! You're ready to go, or at least set to explore Facebook’s many features. Next, let’s dive into how you can find your friends on the platform.
Posting on Facebook
You might not see this button on your keyboard, but don’t worry — finding friends on Facebook is still a breeze.Much like any community, Facebook has its own unique culture that influences how you may choose to update your status. Fortunately, the main rule here is to simply be yourself. Share interesting thoughts, recent events, quirky musings, funny remarks, deep reflections, song lyrics, movie quotes, news about your kids or pets, or really anything that comes to mind. For your very first post, why not mention that you're new to Facebook? You may be surprised by the number of responses you get!
Once you’ve added all your friends, it’s time to check out your news feed (just click on "home" or "news feed") and see what status updates they've shared. This is a great way to catch up on what’s happening with your friends and family. Maybe someone just landed a new job? Or perhaps a friend is planning a movie night? Maybe your neighbor is whipping up something delicious for dinner?
Updating your status is simple. Just head to the "home" or "news feed" tab on your Facebook profile. Then, at the top center of the page, type your status in the bar that asks, "What's on your mind?" After you hit "share," your update will be posted to your wall and show up in your friends’ news feeds.

Facebook Posts and Shares
Thanks to Facebook's "share" feature, passing along a funny article to your friends and family is a breeze.
BananaStock/ThinkstockIn addition to updating your status to keep everyone in the loop about your activities, Facebook is also a fantastic platform for sharing all kinds of content. Did you stumble upon an interesting article, a hilarious quote, or a stunning image posted by a friend? Facebook allows you to easily share or re-share this content with your friends.
When you view your friends' status updates, you'll notice that you can only choose to "comment" or "like." However, with other content like news, photos, or videos posted on Facebook, you'll see an additional option to "share." If something your friend posts resonates with you, simply hit the "share" button, add a quick note, and post it to your own wall.
Sharing content from outside of Facebook is just as simple. To share something you found elsewhere, just copy the link and paste it into the "What's on your mind?" bar. Once you do, Facebook will display the link along with some preview images. Most users then add a short, personal comment before sharing.

Facebook Photos and Videos
One of the best parts of Facebook is browsing your friends' photos and videos, whether they capture a fun vacation, a family gathering, or a child's performance. After all, they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Uploading a photo is often much easier than writing lengthy status updates. There are several ways to share photos and videos, and here are a few options:
Upload a photo or video: If you have a photo or video stored on your computer, click the "photo" button located above the "What's on your mind?" bar. Then, follow the steps to locate the file on your device and upload it to Facebook. Don’t forget to add a brief comment with your media. If you want to upload multiple photos, just click the "photos" link in the sidebar of your profile, then select "upload photos" and follow the prompts.
With webcam: Facebook allows you to take photos or record videos directly using your built-in or external webcam. Just click the "photo" button and follow the on-screen instructions. Keep in mind that to use your webcam with Facebook, you'll need both a camera and the Flash Player software. If this sounds confusing, you might want to consider an alternative method for sharing your photos or videos.
From a mobile device: Connecting your smartphone to Facebook gives you great flexibility. Once your mobile number is linked to your Facebook account (via "account settings") or you’ve installed the Facebook app, you can capture photos and videos directly from your phone and upload them straight to your profile. Follow the specific guidelines for your phone, but generally, the process is straightforward and easy to master.
