Not to mention the expensive, time-consuming lash extensions that had people scheduling regular appointments. But Gen Z is shaking things up yet again, turning the beauty world upside down with a radically different approach. Ghost lashes are not a passing trend—this minimalist beauty movement is here to stay.
What Exactly Are Ghost Lashes?
Ghost lashes are essentially your natural lashes, possibly with a slight enhancement, maintaining a very understated and minimal look with little to no product. They're called ghost lashes because they're almost imperceptible, especially when compared to the bold, heavy mascara look that has long dominated beauty trends.
“Ghost lashes resemble the no-makeup makeup trend, subtly enhancing your lashes in a way that’s barely noticeable,” says Manuel Espinoza, celebrity makeup artist and Black Radiance ambassador.
Celebrity makeup artist Tonya Riner, based in Houston, Texas, believes this minimalist lash look marks a refreshing shift in the beauty industry, offering a welcome break from the overwhelming use of mascara. “Barely-there lashes allow for individual expression, letting the rest of your makeup take the spotlight,” she explains.
The Appeal of Ghost Lashes
Trends naturally rise and fall, often as a response to existing movements. Ghost lashes are a reaction to the heavy, dramatic lash looks of the past, offering a fresh, simple appeal that is undeniably attractive in its simplicity.
“By skipping mascara, you avoid the risks of smudging, flaking, or clumping, all while showcasing a willingness to simplify your look,” says Riner. “Not every makeup style needs the added depth that mascara gives. Sometimes, lashes can even interfere with the vibe you're going for.”
Plus, giving your lashes a break from thick mascara is undeniably beneficial. It’s like taking a break from acrylic nails or swapping exfoliating days for gentler skincare routines.
Espinoza points out, “If you’re a regular lash extension wearer, they can sometimes weaken or damage your natural lashes, leaving them more fragile.” Even washing off mascara daily can take its toll. Going mascara-free lets your lashes breathe and grow naturally.
How to Naturally Enhance Your Lash Line
The most obvious way to embrace ghost lashes is to simply forgo mascara entirely. However, if you're still craving some minimal enhancement, there are gentle ways to nourish and define your lashes naturally, without the need for bold mascara.
- Tightlining: For subtle definition without mascara, tightlining with a shimmering eyeliner along the upper lash line is transformative,” says Riner. “It gives a delicate, reflective glow that feels almost ethereal.
- Smudged Eyeliner: At the Dior and Peter Philips New York Fashion Week fall/winter 2024 shows, dark eyeshadow was applied at the lash roots without mascara. “We’re likely to see more use of dark eyeshadow at the roots to enhance the natural contours of the eyes,” Espinoza predicts. “This is because many are seeking experimental yet wearable makeup looks.”
- Lash Serums: Lash serums are steadily growing in popularity, offering a natural alternative to achieving long, full lashes. Espinoza shares, “Many clients have asked about which lash serums they’re using and how they’ve incorporated them into their skincare routines.”
- Clear or Brown Mascara: If bare lashes feel too daring, Riner recommends trying a clear or soft brown mascara. “Clear mascaras provide a subtle sheen while nourishing lashes—a perfect middle ground for those not quite ready to go completely bare,” she says. Brown mascara gives a bit more definition.”
