Budgets can easily fall apart. They grow stale and uninspiring. As highlighted by the money blog Rags to Reasonable, budgets often fail because they lack a critical component: purpose.
When I first dove into personal finance, all I knew was that I needed to get my money under control. I didn’t give much thought to why or how; I simply followed the guidelines I found in a book. I made a budget, sometimes adhered to it, but mostly ended up ignoring it. I soon realized that my budget had no real purpose. There was no deeper motivation to follow it other than it seemed like the right thing to do. Rags to Reasonable sums it up like this:
A budget isn’t just a collection of numbers (even though it may appear that way). It’s a plan… a plan for your life… and it requires a strong dose of passion to drive it forward.
What that passion is doesn’t matter… but it MUST be there.
What are you passionate about? Do you dream of performing at the Met? Building your dream house? Traveling the world?
That’s the kind of plan (budget) you need to create. A plan rooted in your deepest desires and aspirations.
That’s what transforms a meaningless budget into a truly inspiring life plan.
Once you have a compelling reason for sticking to your budget—and a clear, specific one—it becomes much easier to follow. You’re no longer cutting back just for the sake of it; you’re cutting back so you can travel, save for your wedding, or reach whatever goal is important to you.
