This past Saturday, the world lost an extraordinary musician who may have flown under your radar. His name was Jason Molina, and he struggled with alcoholism. For years, I found solace in his music, especially his projects with Magnolia Electric Co., which masterfully blended despair with a glimmer of hope. His haunting voice often felt like a comforting companion during my toughest moments, offering a fragile sense of optimism—not a guarantee, but a possibility. Tragically, Molina passed away at just 39 years old. Whether you're familiar with his work or not, I encourage you to spend a moment tonight listening to one of his songs. Rest in peace, Jason. Your legacy will endure.
"Hold on Magnolia"
Taken from We Have Signal (the complete performance is included below), featuring Magnolia Electric Co. A poignant lyric to note:
Hold on, Magnolia, I hear that station bell ring You might be holding the last light I see Before the dark finally gets ahold of me
If this resonates with you, this solo rendition from 2007 will undoubtedly move you to tears.
"Just Be Simple"
A heartfelt solo performance by Molina in 2007. While distinct from the full-band album version, it carries the same emotional weight. A sample lyric to reflect on:
You never hear me talk about one day getting out Why put a new address on the same old loneliness? Everybody knows where that is We built that house of his And when he's not home Someone else you know always is
"Farewell Transmission"
This was the first Songs: Ohia track I ever encountered, and it had such an impact that I immediately turned my car around and headed to the nearest record store (do you recall those?). This live rendition from 2003 may not have the best video quality, but the audio holds up well. The song truly begins around the 40-second mark.
"Lioness"
A solo performance from 2000, during the Songs: Ohia period.
"Leave the City"
Live performance in 2007 with Magnolia Electric Co.
