Google is utilizing romance novels to add a human touch to its artificial intelligence. According to BuzzFeed News, Google started feeding its AI system texts from romance novels such as Unconditional Love, Fatal Desire, and Jacked Up several months ago, resulting in notable improvements in its communication capabilities.
Google researchers argue that romance novels are an effective training resource because, despite variations in characters, wording, and story details, the plots often follow predictable patterns. By studying these recurring themes, the AI system can grasp the nuances of the English language and develop more sophisticated ways of expressing ideas.
The Google AI engine has already processed 2865 romance novels and has begun crafting its own sentences inspired by the genre. Google aims to integrate this enhanced AI into its products, such as the Google app and the Smart Reply feature in Google Inbox. While the previous version of the AI could communicate clearly, the updated system, now versed in the language of romance, is expected to deliver more engaging and natural conversations.
“The Google app currently provides very straightforward, factual responses,” explained software engineer Andrew Dai to BuzzFeed News. “With this initiative and future developments, we aim to make the interactions more conversational, with a broader range of tones, styles, and registers.”
