Shoes have evolved from being a minor accessory to a standout piece in fashion. In 2025, bold and statement-making footwear will be a must-have, whether you're running errands, at the office, or enjoying brunch. Expect to see metallic or suede sneakers, sky-high boots, and flip-flops with a high-fashion twist. If you're on the hunt for new footwear, these are the 2025 trends you'll want to explore, according to style experts.
1. Ballet Flats
Ballet flats made a comeback last year, and you can expect them to continue trending throughout 2025.
“They’ve been one of our top categories in 2024, and they’re only going to rise in popularity in 2025,” says Anna Baird, a footwear designer, podiatrist, and founder of Bared Footwear. “These timeless shoes are the perfect way to add a dash of French-girl chic to your outfit, particularly in red or leopard print.”
Just be sure that your ballet flats are designed to properly support your feet. Baird suggests testing the sole for flexibility—if it bends, it’s not a good option.
2. Metallic Sneakers
Metallic tones are going to be a major trend in 2025, and sneakers are one of the key areas where we’ll see them make a big impact.
“Their ability to bring a touch of glamour and versatility to any outfit is indisputable,” says Peter Martinez, designer and co-founder of Leather Skin Shop. “Whether you're dressing up for an evening out or keeping it casual for a day of errands, metallic sneakers provide both style and comfort. Opt for subtler metallic shades such as champagne gold or brushed silver to keep the look elegant.”
If you're looking to grow your metallic footwear collection, consider adding metallic flats and pumps to your wardrobe too.
3. Lace Up Shoes
Lace-up shoes have been a prominent feature in the 2025 runway shows, so expect them to make a significant impact on the fashion scene next season.
“Lace-up shoes are designed with strings made from various fabrics that you wrap around the ankle and up the calf,” explains Jackie Condura, a personal stylist and fashion blogger from New York. “There will be a wide range of styles, from flats to heels and wedges, with plenty of variety in between. Watch out for them especially in sandal form when the weather heats up.”
4. Classic Loafers
One thing that remains true in fashion is that loafers are always in style. However, this classic footwear is set to receive extra attention in 2025.
“This is likely because they provide a chic, well-put-together appearance without compromising on comfort,” says Baird. “Experiment with textures and balance when it comes to loafers. Try a chunky sole loafer like our Wedgebill, layering it with opaque tights, a mini skirt, and an oversized trench coat, or go for a sleek loafer like our Maleo paired with loose pants and a cozy knit jumper.”
5. Pointed Toe Slingbacks
Slingbacks are reshaping the concept of elegance while offering comfort, which aligns perfectly with the growing demand for footwear that is both practical and stylish. “Designers such as Manolo Blahnik and Prada have taken the pointed-toe slingback to new heights, turning it into a symbol of refined sophistication,” says Martinez. “I’ve also noticed that major fashion brands like Chanel and Saint Laurent continue to feature these versatile shoes in their collections, solidifying their lasting appeal.”
6. Suede Sneakers
The rise in popularity of suede sneakers should come as no surprise, as they perfectly complement the ongoing trend of luxe casual wear and quiet luxury.
“Brands like Adidas and Puma are leading the way, with these sneakers showing up everywhere—from social media to the feet of your favorite celebrities,” says Nikki Venus, business style coach and founder of Nikki Venus & Company. “Additionally, collaborations like Miu Miu’s with New Balance are sparking excitement and driving sales, proving these sneakers are more than just a trend—they’re here for the long haul.”
7. T-Bar Shoes
“With straps that cross over the top of the foot and wrap around the ankle as the name suggests, these shoes offer not only style but also security and comfort,” explains Jackie Condura, personal stylist and fashion blogger based in New York. “With the growing popularity of slingbacks and strappy shoes, this style is a great addition to your collection. You'll find them in both heel and flat variations.”
8. Dressy Tall Boots
Boots are a wardrobe essential, and in 2025, the taller, the better. Embrace the elegance of dressy designs too.
“The previously popular style of casual tall boots worn over skinny jeans has now been replaced with more sophisticated designs that are perfect for skirts and dresses,” says Martinez. “With their luxurious appeal and remarkable versatility, dressy tall boots are taking the spotlight. Additionally, dark brown tones are expected to dominate in 2025, so knee-high boots in these hues are a wise investment.”
He adds that these boots pair seamlessly with slim-fit pants, skirts, and sweater dresses, making them a go-to option for the colder months.
9. Peep Toes
After a break from showcasing toes, fashion is swinging back to welcome the return of the peep toe.
“This year will be all about flaunting those fabulous feet,” Condura predicts. “After a long hiatus, they’re making a comeback and are set to become one of the season’s biggest trends.”
Stylist Dianne Boyer agrees, noting that we’ll see both timeless cut-outs and new shapes—like a “V” form or designs that only reveal the big toe. (Alaia and Vince Camuto have nailed this playful twist.)
10. Elevated Flip Flops
In addition to peep toes, flip-flops are expected to make a significant return in 2025—but we’re not talking about those worn-out rubber pairs hiding in your closet.
“Picture a thong sandal with a heel or even one that includes an ankle strap,” says Boyer. “Designers seem to be finding ways to blend chic styles with more casual footwear, and this updated flip-flop design checks all the boxes. What I particularly love about these elevated flip-flops is that they’re comfortable for most foot shapes, especially for those with wider feet.”
