Massages are becoming increasingly popular. The growth of massage franchises, day spas, and innovative techniques like hot stone, shiatsu, or Thai massage highlights a rising trend: More individuals are incorporating massage and spa treatments into their routines.
"Whether you enjoy massages regularly or as an occasional indulgence, tipping your massage therapist is a standard practice," explains Sharon Schweitzer, an international etiquette expert and founder of Protocol & Etiquette Worldwide. "Since massage therapists and aestheticians provide a service, tipping them in addition to the service fee is expected."
Remember, when you receive a massage or facial at a spa, the payment goes to the spa, not directly to the therapist. "Your gratuity directly supports the therapist's income, as they rely on tips," notes Daniel Post, spokesperson for the Emily Post Institute.
Wondering how much to tip for a massage or spa treatment? Here’s a guide to answer all your tipping and etiquette questions.
1. How Much to Tip for a Massage
The customary tipping rate for massages is 20 percent. For instance, if your massage costs $100, a 20 percent tip would be $20. "You can adjust the tip based on your satisfaction with the service," Schweitzer adds.
Always remember to express gratitude. "A sincere thank you can mean as much as the tip itself," Schweitzer emphasizes.
2. How Much to Tip if You're Using a Coupon
Even if you’ve purchased a discounted massage package or deal, it’s important to tip 20 percent based on the original price, not the discounted rate. "The therapist performs the same amount of work regardless of the discount, so they deserve a tip reflecting the full value of the service," Post explains.
3. How Much to Tip for a Private Massage
Tipping is customary for private massage therapists, so a 20 percent tip is standard unless the therapist explicitly states their rate includes gratuity. If unsure, don’t hesitate to ask—tipping is always welcomed, Post advises.
4. How Much to Tip for a Massage at a Hotel or Destination Spa
At all-inclusive spa destinations like Canyon Ranch, gratuity is often included in the pricing or added to the final bill. Schweitzer advises reviewing your bill to confirm if a tip has already been included and to inquire about the tipping policy when checking in or out.
The only scenario where tipping isn’t necessary is if the massage therapist explicitly states they have a no-tipping policy.
5. How Much to Tip a Salon or Spa Owner
Unless the spa or salon owner personally provides the service, tipping isn’t required, Schweitzer notes. If they do perform the massage, a 20 percent tip is appropriate.
6. How Much to Tip When the Service Isn't Great
"Even if your massage wasn’t exceptional, it’s still courteous to leave a tip, even if it’s below the standard 20 percent," Post advises. If you’re dissatisfied, address the issue with the manager or front desk rather than skipping the tip. (It’s even better to communicate during the session so the therapist can adjust and improve your experience.)
Should You Tip in Cash or on a Credit Card?
Schweitzer emphasizes the importance of bringing cash for tipping. "Cash tips allow the therapist to receive their gratuity immediately, rather than waiting for it to be processed through the spa’s payroll system," she explains.
Many spas offer small envelopes for tips. Write your therapist’s name on the envelope and include a personal note if desired.
If envelopes aren’t provided, Schweitzer suggests placing the cash tip in your spa robe pocket and handing it directly to the therapist after your session.
