When a discussion begins to escalate into a full-blown argument, it becomes challenging to restore calm. Harvard Business Review recommends identifying the trajectory of the conversation to steer it toward a more productive outcome.
As conversations grow aggressive, they often lose sight of a logical resolution. To realign the dialogue, it can be helpful to highlight the futility of its current direction. Harvard Business Review refers to this as 'pointing out the default future.'
Pause the discussion and emphasize the destination it’s leading to — the
default future
— the outcome if the current path persists. Avoiding mutual harm can serve as a unifying goal. When individuals understand the 'why' behind taking a more constructive approach, they are often more willing to endure the 'how.' By illustrating the unavoidable negative repercussions of continuing the current course, they may prioritize shared values over the desire to retaliate or protect their ego. Avoid assigning blame; simply state the obvious. For instance, 'This isn’t going well for either of us. We’re heading toward a legal battle that will damage the project, ruin relationships, and cost us both dearly. Can we try a different approach?'
This straightforward technique, when executed effectively, allows both parties to pause, reassess their positions, and approach the discussion anew. The goal is to reach a mutually beneficial resolution.
