Over the weekend, my girlfriend sat me down in front of her laptop and said, 'You need to see this.' We’re probably the least trendy millennials ever, so she had just discovered the viral video for 'The Fox' by Norwegian duo Ylvis, which had already been making waves for a couple of weeks. If you're even further out of the loop than us, you can check it out now.
The core idea of the song is that while most people learn early on that 'dog goes woof/cat goes meow' and the like, Ylvis and many others are clueless about the sounds foxes make. Once the video ended, I nearly felt compelled to adjust my glasses and say, 'Well, obviously, foxes vocalize with...'
But I had no idea. I couldn’t tell you what the fox said!
Luckily, there are some people who do know, and they've captured foxes making those sounds. Wired directs us to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Macaulay Library, which archives audio and video of thousands of animal species.
So, what exactly does the fox say? Like many other animals, foxes have a variety of calls they use for different situations.
Here’s one example:
And here’s another:
And then, there’s this one too:
Additionally, all of these:
...none of which roll off the tongue quite as smoothly as 'Gering-ding-ding-ding-ringerdingering.'
