Not only do they serve essential functions, but they also add significant value and appeal, making properties more enticing to potential buyers. It’s no surprise that homeowners are willing to invest significantly to enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of their bathrooms. According to the 2024 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study, spending on primary bathroom renovations has increased by 11% compared to the previous year, with the highest 10% of budgets reaching $45,000 or more. Check out the most popular bathroom upgrades making waves this year.
Eco-friendly design and practices are becoming more prominent in bathroom trends this year.
Sustainability is gaining more traction among homeowners. According to Houzz, 84% of homeowners opting for primary bathroom renovations are incorporating eco-friendly features. This surge in sustainable choices stems from two main factors: 56% of homeowners are motivated by the environmental impact, while 69% are drawn to the long-term financial savings.
Adaptations for Aging-in-Place
Not every bathroom renovation is aimed at increasing a home's resale value. For some, the focus is on enhancing comfort and accessibility for current living. For 64% of homeowners, this includes addressing specific needs for family members. Of those, 46% are planning for the future requirements of aging family members, and 37% are catering to present needs.
Grab bars are a frequently added feature for those aging in place, with 64% of homeowners renovating their bathrooms to include this accommodation.

According to the report, 1 in 8 homeowners renovating their bathrooms describe their primary bathroom as a "wet room." Wet rooms are fully waterproofed spaces where the shower floor is typically flush with the rest of the bathroom, and often a freestanding tub is integrated into the open shower area. Houzz reports that the primary reasons for choosing wet rooms are their efficient use of space, universal appeal, stylish design, and ease of maintenance.
Eclectic Design Style

Transitional style continues to lead with 23% of homeowners choosing it for their bathroom renovations, followed by contemporary style at 15% and modern style at 11%. Interestingly, the Houzz report also highlights a rise in popularity for eclectic style, now at 5% of bathroom renovations, matching farmhouse style in the process. Although this percentage may seem modest, the report suggests that eclectic design is gaining significant momentum in the market.
Specialty Toilets
While an inviting shower or spacious bathtub often steals the spotlight in bathroom renovations, the toilet is becoming an increasingly popular focus. According to Houzz, over 40% of homeowners are opting for toilets with specialized features. These include bidet seats (23%), bidet seats with water pressure (21%), self-cleaning functions (19%), air dryers (17%), and heated seats (17%). So, if you're considering upgrading your toilet, you're definitely not alone in this trend.
